The $14 cup of coffee at Portola Coffee Lab
I drank a $14 cup of coffee at Portola Coffee Lab. Why? I saw the price on the menu and thought, “when someone has a cup of coffee they assign that much value to, it’s gotta be good— right?” Weeelllll….
About Portola Coffee Lab
This is a hip bar-style coffee joint in The OC Mix shopping center in Costa Mesa. It’s a coffee bar that definitely takes itself seriously, but isn’t over-the-top pretentious. The area behind the bar is reminiscent of a chemistry lab, with the atmosphere sliding from lab to airy gastropub around the bar. There is also communal seating that is shared by other shops in the same space.
There are plenty of great things about Portola Coffee Lab. The staff is super friendly & passionate about their craft, and they have tasty, well-roasted single origin coffee + plenty of interesting brewing methods. I dig the environment, and there’s plenty of space to spread out amongst the communal seating.
Now about that $14 cup of coffee. While I would definitely go back and give Portola Coffee Lab another shot, that $14 cup was certainly not the most-insane-blow-my-mind cup of coffee I’ve ever had. Fun to try, yes. Worth the cost of a half a pound of beans, nope. Unfortunately, for the price of that cup of coffee, I also didn’t get functional wi-fi (it was slow at best), and tethering to my phone wasn’t an option (the signal was poor).
All that said, Portola Coffee Lab is the spot if you’re looking for some great third wave coffee in Orange County. I’ll be back to try another cup the next time I roll through.
