About Winter hiking on Smuggler Mountain
A popular Aspenite exercise route, Smuggler Mountain Road is a public artery leading to a trail head for additional trails which traverse Smuggler Mountain. Don’t let the appearance of seemingly flat reliefs deceive you, Smuggler Mountain Road is almost entirely vertical. Add sea-level lungs to the mix, and this is a difficult climb, especially in the snow. In the winter, snow boots are essential, and although I don’t hike with trekking / hiking poles, they might be useful given the unforgiving continuous elevation of this hike. The rewards, however, are worth the huff and puff. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of every angle of the city of Aspen and the surrounding mountains.
