About HOPE Outdoor Gallery
Why HOPE Outdoor Gallery exists
HOPE Outdoor Gallery has an awesome mission: “to provide muralists, graffiti artists and community groups the opportunity to display large scale art pieces driven by inspirational, positive and educational messaging”.
Seeing HOPE Outdoor Gallery for the first time
HOPE Outdoor Gallery is tucked away on a side street just off North Lamar blvd. As I approached the gallery, it was fun to think about all of the contributors over time. There’s an interesting cyclical transformation of the space as new art overtakes older creative expressions. In that way, the gallery is never completely the same on a day-to-day basis. There’s plenty of street parking, and plenty of visitors too. It might take a second to find a parking spot, but don’t just drive by and take a picture. To truly experience HOPE Outdoor Gallery, it’s important to get out of your car and immerse yourself.
While there are plenty of visitors that just want to leave their mark on this vast artistic landscape, some of the best artists from Austin have contributed to the gallery. I even heard a story from an artist who created a mural for a marriage proposal that took place at the gallery.
Tips for experiencing HOPE Outdoor Gallery
When you visit HOPE Outdoor Gallery, make sure to view it from all angles. Because it’s a three-dimensional body of art (and made out of concrete), there’s a unique opportunity to view the artwork from multiple perspectives. There’s a dirt gutter immediately to the right of the gallery, and further to the right is a winding path that leads to the top of the structure. During the day you’re likely to see a trailer with folks from the HOPE production team selling paint, artwork, and stickers, and answering questions. If you’d like to contribute your own creativity, want to support the project, or have questions, hit them up!
